I am currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Konkuk University, where I have been actively engaged in research and education since 2018. My academic background includes a Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Engineering from the Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), earned in 2014. I have since built my career through positions as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the USDA Agricultural Research Service (2014–2016) and Research Professor at UNIST (2016–2018).
My primary research interests lie in water quality monitoring, algal bloom detection, and environmental modeling. Traditional microscopy methods for identifying freshwater algal cells, while accurate, are time-consuming and labor-intensive. To address these challenges, I am exploring deep learning-based approaches for automatic algal cell identification. My work also involves integrating remote sensing technologies—from satellites, UAVs, and airborne sensors—to monitor harmful algal blooms over large spatial scales with high temporal resolution.
In addition, I focus on enhancing existing hydrological and water quality models such as SWAT, HSPF, and EFDC. While these models are often used as packages, I aim to improve their performance by inserting new pollutant fate and transport algorithms or modifying internal logic to better reflect environmental complexities.
As an educator and researcher, I am committed to developing practical solutions to environmental issues while fostering critical thinking and scientific curiosity in my students. I look forward to advancing sustainable practices in environmental engineering through interdisciplinary research and innovation.
